Glycidol is a bi functional, chlorine free molecule with a wide range of commercial applications. A Significant amount of glycidol derivative development work has been carried out by GLT with exciting results.

Examples of some of the more well-known derivatives that can be produced with green glycidol:

  • Glycidyl methacrylate
  • Glycidyl ether/esters (non-ionic surfactants)
  • Polyglycerols
  • Guanifesin
  • Alkanolamines (CO2 Capture Solvent)
  • Guaifenesin
  • Ethylhexylglycerin
  • Diglycidylterephtale

Applications Business case: Glycidyl methacrylate

Application 1: Glycidyl methacrylate

Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is an methacrylate ester used in the production of polymer coatings and finishes, adhesives, plastics and elastomers. Traditionally GMA is manufactured by the reaction of epichlorhydrin with methacrylic acid however green glycidol offers a new, chloride free, more efficient process.

  • Initial Yields > 85% in glycidol at GLT labs
  • Glycidol route is catalytic in base, EPI is stoichiometric (less byproducts compared to EPI)
  • 1 Step transesterification vs 2 step dehydrodechlorination
  • Methanol can be recycled to MMA production, Dimethyl carbonate and biodiesel production
